A timber house on a rock shelf, built to be closed for eight months of the year.

Introduction

A family retreat sited on a granite shelf above the water. The house is a long cedar volume raised on point foundations, with shutters that fold the whole west elevation away in summer and seal it in winter.

01

The challenge

No road access, a short construction season, and a requirement that the house survive long unoccupied winters without damage.

02

Our approach

The house was prefabricated in cedar-framed panels and barged to site, then assembled in eleven weeks. A single shutter system does the work of curtains, security and storm protection.

03

The outcome

Assembly touched the rock at nine points. The site was left without excavation, and the shutters have needed no maintenance beyond oiling.
