An eight-room guesthouse organised around a stair, a bath and a garden.

Introduction

A narrow machiya plot rebuilt as a small guesthouse. Rooms are stacked over three floors, each one opening to either the street lattice or the rear garden, never both.

01

The challenge

A plot four and a half metres wide, a conservation frontage that could not change, and eight rooms to place without any of them feeling like a corridor.

02

Our approach

We treated circulation as the main space. The stair widens at each landing into a place to sit, and the guest rooms are deliberately small, compensated by shared thresholds and the garden.

03

The outcome

Every room has daylight on two sides despite the width of the plot. The original street lattice was repaired rather than replaced.
