A photographer's studio and apartment in a converted rope factory.

Introduction

Two floors of a nineteenth-century rope factory, reworked as a working studio below and a compact apartment above. The existing timber structure was kept exposed; everything new is legible as an insertion.

01

The challenge

A protected shell with irregular floor levels, and a brief that asked for a professional studio and a private home to share one entrance without ever meeting.

02

Our approach

A single new stair, set against the north wall, separates the two lives of the building. Studio surfaces are raw and replaceable; the apartment above is lined in warm oak and plaster.

03

The outcome

The north glazing was restored to its original opening size, giving the studio nine hours of usable daylight in midwinter.
